Uncover Your Path To Guitar Mastery - A 5 Step Guide to Becoming a Guitar Player

Guitar playing is a rewarding and fulfilling experience, but the journey toward mastery can be overwhelming. With so many styles to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. This article will guide you through the process of choosing your path as a guitar player, and provide tips for success along the way.

Step 1: Choosing The Type of Guitar Player

The first step in your journey as a guitar player is to choose what kind of player you want to be. This may be a no-brainer for some but there are many paths to choose from, including lead guitar, rhythm guitar, fingerstyle, or simply strumming. While it is possible to become proficient in all of these styles, it is best to start with one and then move on to others as your skills develop. The path will change from time to time. Just be sure to follow your gut and you'll be where you need to be when you need to be there.

Step 2: Choosing Your Playing Style

The physical aspect of playing guitar is the most challenging part of the journey. Your first few months will be awkward as you get used to holding the guitar, fretting notes, and developing your finger muscles and picking technique.  I suggest you focus much of this time on these fundamentals and hold the style in your sights as you develop. Whether it's shredding, blues, or classic rock if you work heavily on your fundamentals they will all be easier as your progress. Don't get discouraged, with time and practice, you will develop the physical skills you need to play any style.

Step 3: Choosing Your Style of Music

You may already know what kind of music you want to play, but it's still a good idea to choose a style. Remember that the fundamentals of guitar playing apply to all styles, and what may not seem interesting at first can be applied to the style you love to play in the future.

Step 4: Set Aside Time for Practice

Consistent practice is the key to becoming a great guitar player. Set aside a specific time each day for practicing and make it a habit. Doing this every day will help you develop your skills and create a routine that will make it easier for you to progress.

Step 5: Do This Often

Do This Exercise to boost your confidence.
Take 1 minute before you start playing your guitar, travel to the future and
1. imagine yourself playing with complete understanding and ease.
2. Just picture yourself enjoying your knowledge of harmony and theory, practicing effectively, and nailing your groove.
3. See yourself confidently performing in front of others with a big smile on your face, and notice how much they enjoy your playing.
As you play, you can feel the perfect blend of your emotions, and intuition.
Take another 60 seconds to really let that vision sink in. If you keep coming back to this vision, you'll surely become it. Play on!

This exercise is from a great book I picked up called “The Inner Game of Fingerstyle Guitar”. There are no tabs or lessons as it's more of a philosophical approach. So it really is a good read for any style of guitar playing. I highly recommend it. Use my Amazon link to check it out here.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right path as a guitar player is a personal journey. Whether you choose to focus on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, fingerstyle or choose to explore multiple styles, the most important thing is to find a style that resonates with you and work towards becoming the best guitar player you can be. So, choose your path, set your goals, and start practicing today!
