Many guitar players overlook the value of basic exercises, but these simple drills are the backbone of smooth playing. This particular exercise lays the foundation for you to move across the neck fluidly, refine your picking, and improve your speed and accuracy, all while laying the groundwork for playing comfortably in a key.
Let’s break it down step by step. View Tabs
Step 1: Warm Up Your Picking Hand
Start by focusing on your picking hand only. This is your chance to analyze and refine your technique.
1. Downstrokes
Pick steadily downward on an open string (ideally each string, but at least the high E string) for about a minute.
2. Upstrokes:
Reverse direction and pick upward for another minute.
3. Alternate Picking:
Combine both, down-up-down-up, for a final minute.
By isolating these motions, you can tweak your picking technique for efficiency and comfort. Once you’ve worked through this, your picking hand should feel warmed up and ready to tackle the fretboard.
Step 2: Ascend the Fretboard
Now, let’s bring in your fretting hand and focus on coordination.
1. Start on the second fret and play groups of four notes ascending in pitch: 2-3-4-5.
If you’re a beginner, and struggling, start with all downstrokes and play each note four times, then three times, then twice. Do this with up and alternate strokes as well. Then progress to single note strokes to continue the rest of this exercise
2. Once you’re comfortable, start with the open position then shift to the next group: 0-1-2-3, 1-2-3-4, then 2-3-4-5, and so on. To at least the 12th fret and back.
If shifting positions feels tricky, stay in one position until you feel confident enough to move to the next. Over time, this movement will become second nature.
Step 3: Descend the Fretboard
Next, reverse the pattern and play descending groups: 3-2-1-0, 4-3-2-1, etc. Again, accent the first note of each group to emphasize rhythm and clarity.
